Ageing is becoming one of the most significant demographic transformations, with implications for virtually all sectors of society, such as housing, healthcare, transportation and social protection. Safeguarding healthy lives and promoting well-being at all ages is essential to achieving sustainable development.
Good health ensures independence, security, and continuous productivity in old age. However, non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes can reduce quality of life, raise health-care costs, and increase pressure on family members who are responsible for the care of older adults. NCDs kill 41 million people each year, equivalent to 71% of all deaths globally. In the United States, over 90% of older adults have at least one chronic disease, and 73% have two or more.
Vaccination is an important element of a more comprehensive health promotion strategy to healthy ageing, as vaccines can help reduce the burden of infectious diseases, decrease functional decline and add healthy life years. Despite governmental efforts and repeated cost-analyses demonstrating the cost-effectiveness of adult vaccination, coverage tends to be low.
As such, the IFA is hosting a Pre-Conference Vaccines4Life Summit that aims to inform the global agenda for a life course approach to adult vaccination. The summit will bring together experts, thought leaders and decision makers in immunization, ageing, public health, health policy, health economics, government, journalism, digital marketing and communications and frontline healthcare professionals such as physicians, pharmacists, nurses and nurse practitioners.
- To understand the public impact of vaccine preventable diseases
- To inspire change through examples of good practice from around the world
- To galvanize action through targeted communication strategies
